THE JANE MORRIS ALCOVE AND BATH
Jane (Burden) Morris was the wife of legendary English architect, furniture and textile designer, artist and writer William Morris, most notably associated with the English Arts and Crafts Movement. They met when Jane and her sister were posing as models for a mural he was working on during his time at Oxford. William adored Jane instantly. Of his easel work, only one oil has remained and it is of Jane entitled, La belle Iseult.
While we like to romanticize that a marriage such as theirs was ideal, the reality is that no matter how wonderful a husband may be, every once in awhile a woman just needs a space to call her own.
Our design for the bedroom began by choosing one of the guiding principles of green design and one of the most economical to execute: use as minimal foot print as possible. In this house we could think of no better place to exhibit this than this bedroom. Measuring a mere 115 square feet, it is not only the smallest bedroom, but the smallest living space in the house. The challenge was to create a room as flexible as possible—be it a guest room for visiting relatives; a reading nook to escape from it all or a bedroom for a child. The use of eco-smart textiles, antiques, organic bedding and low VOC paints will show that you don’t have to sacrifice comfort or beauty to be environmentally conscious.
In the bathroom it is all about a clean aesthetic design that is both pleasing to the eye and environmentally sound. Colors of warm latte, stone and creamy white, with just a touch of rose combine to create a space that feels far larger than it is. Water efficient products, such as the toilet and faucets, are disguised in fashion forward designs. A subtle dash of rose linen fabric, organic cotton towels & an embroidered shower curtain round out the softness every bathroom craves. Finally, energy efficient light bulbs concealed within the shades of smart and sassy sconces reveal that good things really can come in small packages.
