The Terrace – Outdoor Living Space

What could be “greener” than bringing the outside in and the inside out? The design of this innovative house connects the occupants with nature by providing direct access from all the significant interior spaces to the outdoor living space. This outdoor oasis is flanked by the two wings of the house, promoting full and efficient use of the home’s imprint on the site while creating a private and tranquil refuge.

The central pool area is a haven for relaxation, exercise, and lounging. Located off the great room, it serves to extend the great room’s gracious comfort to the outdoors. One wing features an outdoor dining terrace offering an al fresco experience. The opposite wing features an outdoor kitchen that provides easy access to and from the main kitchen, perfect for entertaining or quiet evenings.

All the furnishings in the outdoor area are eco-friendly and consistent with “green” standards. To enhance one’s experience with nature the design will integrate elements of earth, wind, water, and fire. The result will be a luxurious and glamorous setting where everyone will want to spend their time.

Barbara Hawthorn has more than 25 years’ experience in interior design, project management and urban planning. She established her namesake firm, Barbara Hawthorn Interiors, in 1984 specializing in "timeless, trend-resistant design". Her original designs mix modern, comfortable furnishings with fine art and antiques, and an exceptional use of lighting. From her office in McLean, she and her staff direct an average of twenty projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region each year.
