The Garden Room (AKA, The Screened Porch)

The Garden Room provides additional ‘living’ room that is a perfect place to entertain, enjoy a quiet conversation, a glass of wine, or a good book. With views of the garden, pool and terrace, this space has been designed to be visually interactive with the outside: the colors and texture reflect the surrounding landscape, and forward looking, traditional styling creates an inviting retreat. The use of natural looking materials that are also green—sustainable wood, natural textures, recycled and recyclable fibers, repurposed furniture—demonstrate that it is possible to have design that is beautiful as well as earth friendly (and will withstand the weather). The Garden Room also reflects ‘human green’ design principles: an approach to color, furniture, arrangement and function that is directly beneficial to the people occupying the built environment.

Dee Thornton has been part of the Washington design scene since 1989. She established Houseworks Interiors in 1992; the firm’s design studio is located in Old Town, Alexandria. Dee’s work has been featured in numerous show houses as well as in national and local publications.

Houseworks Interiors’ primary focus is on high end residential design. Dee’s philosophy is that every home should tell the client’s story—reflect their lifestyle, taste, and personality—and be appropriate for the architecture of the building. Dee creates interiors that are classic, functional, and up-to-date for today’s living, and she is known for careful use of color and lighting, and her close attention to detail.
